Hiking News Roundup

In catching up with what's going on around the Smokies and around the hiking blogosphere, I came across several news stories that may be of interest to you:

* Big South Fork park officials are seeking volunteers on National Public Lands Day to help with five trail projects in the Big South Fork and the Obed Wild and Scenic River areas. Click here for more information.

* The National Geographic ADVENTURE website has a pretty good article that hikers ought to store in their memory banks: Ten Tips to Decoding Backcountry Weather Patterns.

* The North Carolina USDA National Forests website has a great article offering suggestions on where to see the best fall colors for the upcoming autumn season. The website divides their recommendations between high and mid-level elevations.

* Dr. Earl J. Hess, associate professor and Stewart W. McClelland Chair in History at Lincoln Memorial University, will be presenting a program called "The Civil War Comes to Cumberland Gap," on Saturday, September 17th at 2:00 p.m. in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park's visitor center auditorium.

* Mammut, The Access Fund, Mountain Gear and Paradox Sports, a community of disabled athletes, announced yesterday that disabled athletes from Paradox will be climbing three classic U.S. peaks, as part of the Biggest Peak Project in History, to promote the vision of open mountain access for all.

* In case you didn't see my posting from yesterday, I just returned from a five week trip to Glacier National Park. Coincidentally, Steven from MyLifeOutdoors is in the process of posting a series of articles about his five-day backpacking trip in the northwestern section of Glacier. I haven't had a chance to read his three entries yet, but Steven is an excellent writer and photographer. Here's a link to his third entry. He has links to his first and second days on the trail at the top of the posting. As soon as I'm a little more settled in I'll definitely be reading these as this is the only area of the park that I've never visited.

* Finally I wanted mention that Tom Mangan from the Two-Heel Drive blog has posted his 10 best hiking and camping blogs. More importantly, I wanted to thank Tom for listing this blog among that list.
